[8/20/2013 5:09pm] From the meet director...

Meet entries made here.  [Entry deadline midnight, Wednesday, 8/21/2013)

Time is literally flying and the Pickens Preview is only a few days away.  Those of you who have already registered your athletes on milesplit, thank you for doing so.  Everyone who has not yet done so, please keep in mind that I will be pulling rosters soon and loading them into our meet management software.  Thank you for helping by getting your athletes registered by tomorrow evening (Wednesday, 8-21-13).

Also, we are very happy to have such an awesome turnout for our event.  Because there has been so much interest in the Pickens Preview, we are going to have to add that extra open JV race at the end of the day.  We will be following this schedule:

Race Times:

(1) Middle School Boys - (3200 meters) 8:00 AM
(2) Middle School Girls - (3200 meters) 8:30 AM
(3) Varsity Boys - (5K) 9:15 AM
(4) Varsity Girls - (5K) 9:45 AM
(5) J.V. Boys - (5K) 10:30 AM
(6) J.V. Girls - (5K) 11:00 AM
(7) Open / Co-Ed. JV Race - (5K) - 11:30 AM

I-575 turns into GA 515. Continue North toward Jasper. Turn right on Hwy 108 at the first traffic light. At the top of the hill, turn left on the first road, Refuge Rd. Buses continue to the 4-way stop and turn left. Turn left again at the Rec building. Buses will be parked in the lot behind the rec building. NO buses or spectators will be allowed to park in the lot AT the rec building! That is reserved for rec department classes and for those parties who have rented the building for the day. Parents and spectators should park either at Roper Park on the right or at Pickens County Middle School on the left.

Course: With a little walking, runners are visible over approximately 1/2 of the course with great views of start and finish for spectators. Course is mostly flat, but with some short, challenging hills and a tunnel. Terrain varies and includes grass, asphalt, gravel road, dirt, and cement sidewalk. Finish is close to the start.

The middle school course involves much of the same terrain and will also go through the tunnel to the Pickens County Middle School part of the course. Runners will return to finish on the same field they start on.

Concessions: Food and drinks will be available.

Spectator Admission: A $3 entry fee will be charged for adults, $1 entry for students and children.

Meet director note - Fri, Aug 23, 2013 at 12:48 PM

Thank you very much for getting your entries in to me.  Packets are being put together right now for you to pick up in the morning.  You may do so in the Coaches' hospitality room located in the Boys' and Girls' Club at Roper Park (next to the concession stand.)

Please remind your parents and spectators that they need to park either at Roper Park or at PIckens County Middle School across the street from the park.  Someone will be there to help direct traffic in the morning.  Buses should park behind the rec building.  Please also remind your parents and spectators that there is a $3 admission fee for adults and a $1 fee for children.  Concessions will be available during the event.

If you are bringing a tent, please put it up INSIDE the fence of one of the baseball fields.  We do NOT want tents put up outside any of the fences.  When you arrive, choose your baseball field and put up your tent inside it.

Most of you have already sent payment for your entry.  If you have not, please bring it with you in the morning.  You may turn it in when you pick up your packets.

Please check your packet and let me know as soon as possible if there is a problem of any kind.  If you cannot physically find me either at the finish line or near the coaches' hospitality room, call my cell phone:  770-894-2821.  I do not plan to have a coaches' meeting in the morning as I know you need to spend time with your athletes, but I am certainly available if you need me or have questions.

I am attaching info sheets for you to share with your students and parents again.

Thank you very much for participating in the Pickens Preview.  I look forward to a great morning of racing!

Other Notes

If you are going to run the Pickens Preview race on Saturday, please review the following notes.  You must have registered to run.  See the list on our web site for our entries.  We do have enough for team entries in the boy's and the girl's races which is very exciting (you need at least five runners).

  • Please report to our team flag no later than 30-45 minutes before your race (you should be able to spot the flag easily when you arrive at the race course).
  • The boy's start is 8:00am and the girl's is 8:30am.
  • Spikes are NOT recommended for this course as much of it is on harder surfaces.  It's recommended you wear running shoes or remove the spikes from your racing shoes.
  • The coaches will arrive early to get the team packet and will be waiting for you with your race number ... that's all you'll need before going to the start line.
  • You will however want to have time for a warm-up run and some extra time to relax or for contingencies.
  • Be sure to have a light breakfast as soon as you get up.  About an hour before the race stick to water and very basic foods.
  • This is a short race (3200m) so don't worry about drinking too much water, one water bottler ahead of the race is enough.
  • Wear black shorts if possible and if you don't have an Alpha Crush jersey we'll try to lend you one and will have extras on hand.
  • We expect the boys race to have 80-90 runners and the girls to have 50-60.
  • The top 10 finishers will receive medals and the top three teams will each receive a trophy.  We'll talk team scoring before the race!
  • The varsity races will take place right after the middle school races but you can leave if you need to.
